Kemp's Ridley

The Kemp's Ridley swims the shallow depths of the Central American coasts,  it often is found in the gulf of Mexico. It regularly lays eggs in the beach of Ranch Nuevo, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

The Kemp's Ridley has been hunted almost to extinction. In the past people used to kill the turtle and steal its eggs for food whenever  it came ashore  to lay eggs. Now that protection is afforded the major threat's to this particular turtle. Many turtles are caught in the dragnets that fisherman use for catching shrimps and crabs. Others cross in the paths of motor boat.

Between April and July the female turtle lays her eggs on s single stretch beach in Mexico.

The color of the shell varies according to the amount of algae and parasites growing on the turtles back.
