Galapagos Giant Tortoise

An archipelago is a group of islands.  The Galapagos archipelago, which is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America is home to the Galapagos Giant Tortoise.

During the time that the Europeans were exploring this area of the New World they needed food for their sailors.  They would often stop at the Galapagos Islands and capture the Giant Tortoises and take them back to their ships.  The Galapagos Tortoise can survive for long periods without food or water.  While this solved the sailors problem for fresh meat the 1000's of captured animals caused this species to become almost extinct.  Their is currently only one Galapagos Giant tortoise left , his name is George.
