The First Baptist Church was built in 1926-1927. The formal
dedication of the church was held March 6, 1927. About 2,000 people were
standing in the sanctuary during the dedication ceremony. This was Douglas
Ellington's first big commission in Asheville, North Carolina. First Baptist Church is built of 3,000 tons of crushed stone, 2,000 tons of concrete, 200 tons of steel for the dome, and a million bricks to build the Church. It took 450 railroad cars to bring these materials to Asheville, North Carolina. The brick was supposed to be used at William and Mary's College because the brick was made to look like the brick used in constructing the original campus designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The extra brick was bought by Douglas D. Ellington to construct the First Baptist Church to give it an older appearance. |
