First Lady, Patricia Ryan Nixon

Was born on March 16, 1912 in Ely Nevada to William Ryan and Kate Halberstadt Bender Ryan. Her mother died in 1925 and her father died when she was 18. She attended the University of Southern California. For a while she worked as a government economist. She held part time jobs on campus, as a sales clerk in a fashionable department store, and as an extra in the movies. She accepted a position as a high school teacher. She also worked as a secretary and as x-ray technician. She got a job in the OPA office. She worked as a stenographer. She also worked as a dental assistant and as a telephone operator. Patricia Ryan Nixon first met the future President Richard Nixon when she joined the Whittier Community Players. They went to movies together, trips to the beach on Sundays, and met at ice cream parlors. After their courtship, they were married on June 21, 1940 at Riverside, California in the Mission Inn. Richard Nixon was elected as the 37th President of the US in1968. During their years in the White House Pat contributed more than 500 pieces of antique furniture and works of art into the White House. After leaving the White House in disgrace she completley stayed out of the public eye. Pat spent her later years reading, gardening, listening to music, and enjoying visits from her children and grandchildren. She died Jun 22, 1993 of cancer and was buried on the grounds of the Nixon Library in California.TOP
