First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born on November 14, 1896 in Boone, Iowa, to John Sheldon and Elivera Doud. She had three sisters. She attended Denver Public Schools and Miss Walcott's Private Finishing School. For awhile she worked at a succession of posts in the United States. Mamie first met the future President Dwight Eisenhower while visiting Fort Sam Houston, Texas. After their courtship, they were married on July 1, 1916 in Denver at the Doud's house. In 1917, their

Dwight Eisenhower was elected as the 34th President of the United States in the year of 1953. During their years in the White House, she actively played a political role and presented a public image. After their term in office ended she continued to be with her husband. They returned to Gettysburg for
eight years of contented retirement together. She died on November 1, 1979 and is buried in a small chapel on the grounds of the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas.TOP
