First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born on November 14, 1896 in Boone, Iowa, to John Sheldon and Elivera Doud. She had three sisters. She attended Denver Public Schools and Miss Walcott's Private Finishing School. For awhile she worked at a succession of posts in the United States. TOP
Mamie first met the future President
Dwight Eisenhower while visiting Fort Sam Houston, Texas. After
their courtship, they were married on July 1, 1916 in Denver
at the Doud's house. In 1917, their
Dwight Eisenhower was elected as the 34th President of the United States in the year of 1953. During their years in the White House, she actively played a political role and presented a public image. Mamie had more of a traditional view of a woman that was brought up in the early years. Therefore she avoided making public comments.TOP
After their term in office ended
she continued to be with her husband. They returned to Gettysburg
