First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson

Was born on December 22, 1912 in Karnack, Texas to Thomas Jefferson and Minnie Patillo Taylor. The nursemaid who worked for her family exclaimed after her birth,
"she's as pretty as a ladybird." From then on that was her nickname. She had two
older brothers. When she was five, her mother died and her Aunt Effie moved in to

Lady Bird first met the future President Lyndon Baines Johnson when she stopped off
In Austin in late August. After a three month courtship, they were married in an
impromptu wedding on November 17, 1934. In 1944, their first daughter, Linda Bird was born. Lucy Baines, their second daughter, was born in 1947. The whole family

She contributed to her husband campaign by speaking at politicals breakfasts, lunches, and dinners to help him become the vice-president. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Lyndon Baines Johnson became the President of the United States. During their years in the White House, Lady Bird devoted her time to advancing the cause of women in government, holding special luncheons for women of achievement, suggesting women for top official posts, and attending meetings of women's groups. Through her efforts, Congress passed a law aimed at protecting the natural environment and beautifying the country's highways by limiting billboards and promoting the planting of wildflowers.
