First Lady Elizabeth Bloomer Ford was born on April 8, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois
to Hortense and William Stephenson Bloomer. She attended Central High School.
She also attended Bennington College in Vermont and studied to become a dancer.

Betty first met the future President Gerald Ford while he was working as a lawyer. After their courtship, they were married in a brief church ceremony on October 15, 1948.

Her husband became president after the resignation of President Nixon. During their years in the White House, she actively participated in supporting the creative arts and encouraging better treatment of ailing elderly Americans. She also worked for ratification of
