First Lady Elizabeth Wallace Truman was born on February 13, 1885 in Independence, Missouri to Margaret Gates and David Wallace. After her father died, Bess, her mother, and three brothers moved into the house of her maternal grandfather. TOP

Elizabeth first met the future President Harry S. Truman while in Sunday school. They attended the same schools from 5th grade through high school. After their courtship they were married on June 28, 1919 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence, Missouri. In 1921, their daughter Mary Margaret was born. TOP

Elizabeth helped contribute to her husband's campaign for Vice-President by travelling with him and sharing his platform appearances. Due to the death of President Roosevelt Harry Truman became the 33rd President of the United States on April 12, 1945. TOP

After their term in office ended, she continued to live in the family home. She died in 1982 and was buried beside her husband.TOP
