First Lady Elizabeth Wallace Truman was born on February 13, 1885 in Independence, Missouri to Margaret Gates and David Wallace. After her father died, Bess, her mother, and three brothers moved into the house of her maternal grandfather. TOP

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Elizabeth first met the future President Harry S. Truman while in Sunday school. They attended the same schools from 5th grade through high school. After their courtship they were married on June 28, 1919 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence, Missouri. In 1921, their daughter Mary Margaret was born. Elizabeth helped contribute to her husband's campaign for Vice-President by travelling with him and sharing his platform appearances.
