How this survey was completed:
 |
We made a list of questions about surgical hospital experiences. We made sure that
we did not get too personal and that the kids chose a new name for themselves for the
survey. |
 |
We went to fourth and fifth grades in our school over a two week period of time.
We asked for volunteers who had stayed in a hospital at some time to complete our survey. |
 |
Out of the 45 surveys finished by fourth and fifth grade kids, we had to discard
17 for the following reasons: Did not have surgery, were more than 50% incomplete,
or were not understandable. |
|
|
Of the 28 surveys from kids who had surgery in a hospital, the following
is true:
 |
16 kids went home the same day, 8 stayed overnight, 2 stayed for 1 week, 2 stayed
for 2+ weeks. |
 |
4 took a tour and 24 didn't take the tour. |
 |
11 got pretests and 17 didn't get pretests. |
 |
11 got to ride in a wheel chair once, 4 got it twice, 5 got it tons of
times, and 8 never got one. |
 |
17 didn't notice the smell of the hospital, 8 liked it, and 3 hated it. |
 |
10 had no food, 2 didn't want food, 4 didn't like the food, 7 liked some
of the food, and 5 loved it all. |

We found that most kids in our survey had fears
before they went into the hospital. Some of them were:
 |
"Will I be okay? What is going to
happen?" ---Skategirl |
 |
"I was afraid that the surgeon
would mess up." ---Knee Knee |
 |
"I was afraid of being in a lot of
pain when I woke up." --Sarah |
We did find two things, after our tour and after doing
the survey.
-
The kids who knew what was going to happen were
less scared and more comfortable in the hospital because of
it.
-
That all of the kids that we surveyed said
that it was much easier than they thought it would be and that
they shouldn't have feared it.
