| The snare drum is one of the most popular drum besides the
bass drum and the timpani. It is shaped like a wide cylinder and at the
top it is covered by a drumhead made of leather. The snare drum is
often used to produce small patterns of repeated notes or more or less
prolonged rolls. It can be muted by relaxing the tension of the snare. The snare
drum has skins at both it's upper and lower end, and a "snare" of
catgut string or wire is stretched over the lower skin to produce a rattling
sound when the upper skin is struck. |
