Snare

Home Up

The snare drum is one of the most popular drum besides the bass drum and the timpani.  It is shaped like a wide cylinder and at the top it is covered by a drumhead made of leather.  The snare drum is often used  to produce small patterns of repeated notes or more or less prolonged rolls. It can be muted by relaxing the tension of the snare. The snare drum has skins at both it's upper and lower end, and a "snare" of catgut string or wire is stretched over the lower skin to produce a rattling sound when the upper skin is struck.
