Making a bullet for a pistol :
During the Revolutionary War, bullets were made out of lead. The owner of the gun would make his own bullets. The owner would have a mold that came with the pistol. The mold had a circle shape to make round balls. Lead would be melted over a fire and poured into the mold. The metal would dry and then excess lead would be cut off of the mold and bullet. Later gunpowder was added. Then cloth, usually linen, was put over the bullet so it would fit into the barrel tightly.
Cleaning a Flintlock Gun
1. Take out any unfired bullets or gun powder using a cleaning rod.
2. Clean out the barrel with a clean cloth or rag.
3. Brush out the burnt gun powder in the priming pan.
4. Sprinkle oil on the lock.
5. If the flint is worn out replace it with a new flint piece.
Many weapons were used among the battles of the Revolutionary War. There were daggers used for up close battles. Then there were the guns that caused a lot of causalities. Most of the guns were muskets. Many men also had swords. A specialty weapon during the war was a sword with a pistol in the grip/handle side of the sword. The trigger was in the grip. Another gun was the Kentucky flintlock rifle. Many muskets from the Revolutionary War had bayonets on the end so they could either shoot or stab the enemy quickly. They used pocket pistols with flintlock mechanism. Cannons were used during the war, too. They could be fired from ships as well as from the ground.
