group of people who have certain political beliefs in common.
In the U.S. the two main political parties that are called the
Democratic party and the Republican party. There are some mascots
for the two parties ,the Democratic party has a donkey, and the
Republican party has an elephant. The parties control the government, and
everyone has to vote for a candidate. The Democratic party started
in the late 1700s as the Democratic/Republican party. Then in
1824,it broke into several groups, including the Democratic party.
The first two presidents in the Democratic party were Thomas Jefferson
and Andrew Jackson. In 1854 the Republican party was formed. Then
in 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican president.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s the Republican party tented
to be the stronger party. The Republican party elected more presidents
and often more members in Congress than did the Democratic party.
In the 1930s and early 1940s the Democrats were very strong. During
this period,the Americans elected Franklin.D.Roosevelt,a Democrat,president
four times.Since the middle1940s,the Democratic and the Republican
parties have had equal power. The Republican presidents have spent
more years in the White House, but there have been more Democrats
elected to Congress.
