The Ersatz Elevator
Lemony Snicket recently came out with his 6th book, the Ersatz Elevator. This time, the Baudelaires find their new guardians, Jerome and Esme on Dark Avenue.
Mr. Poe has been raised on his job. He is now head of Orphan Patrol and is going up to a mountain where they think the Quagmire triplets were spotted.
It is so dark on the Dark Avenue, that you cannot even see, but the doorman got the Baudelaires' attention and said that their new guardians are on the Penthouse, which is either on the 48th or 84th floor. "Thank You!' the Baudelaires reply and prepare to take the elevator up but the doorman stops them.
"You cannot use that!' he screams, because stairs are "in" and elevators are "out." "In," meaning popular at the time, and "out" meaning unpopular at the time. So the Baudelaires were forced to use the stairs which took over an hour!
When they finally reached the top, Jerome greeted them at the door. He was very kind to the Baudelaires. Esme wasn't as nice. She always kept up with what was in and what was out. She wouldn't let anyone in her family do anything that was out. "Orphans" at the time were "in", so Esme was happy to have the Baudelaires. She was the one who had the elevators shut down!
The Baudelaires
