Popsicles are great in the summer, but did you know that they were invented in the middle of winter? And by an eleven-year-old?

It all started in 1905 when little Frank Epperson was having fun making some soda pop. He mixed powdered soda mix with some water. That night he accidentally left the mixture on the porch over night. Now, it WAS winter, so, when he took it inside the next morning, it was frozen solid with the mixing stick sticking right out of the top. He picked it up, licked it, and it was surprisingly delicious.

He called it an Epperson icicle. After awhile, he shortened the name to Epsicle. He sold the Epsicle for five cents each that summer.

Later on, he changed the name again to popsicle, because he made it with soda POP mix.

Now you can get popsicles in all sorts of flavors, shapes, and sizes. You can thank that eleven year old boy back in 1905 who made a mistake that worked!

If you could invent any kind of frozen delight, what would you call it, what would it be made from, what would it look like, and what would it taste like? Let us know by going to our guest book in Activities.
