Many butterflies
live in tropical rainforests, but more live in Central and South America
than anywhere else. Many types of butterflies have very little known
about them, because they live in very dense forests and are very hard to
spot. Some of
the rainforest butterflies are cattle heart swallowtails, the
mother-of-pearl butterfly, and the purple spotted swallowtail. Each
of these butterflies has something interesting about itself. For
example, the mother- of- pearl butterfly actually shrinks in the wet
season and grows in the dry season! The cattle heart swallowtail can
be seen flying from sea level to 5000 feet high. The purple spotted
swallowtail lives in the dense forests of New Guinea, and very little is
known about it. Some swallowtails have red
spots on their wings. This makes their predators attack their wings
instead of their body, giving the butterfly a chance to
escape. Morphos
butterflies are dazzling butterflies. Some species are hunted, and
their wings are made into jewelry. However, this might not effect
the population, because only males are hunted.
