Theodore
Taylor was born on June 21, 1921, in Statesville, North Carolina.
His family consisted of himself, his mom and dad and four sisters.
While Theodore was growing up, he had a newspaper route, sold
candy, and collected scrap metal for money--he worked very hard
to help his family. When Theodore was 13, his family moved to
Virginia so his father could work in a naval yard. This is also
where he got his first writing job which was writing a sports
column for his local newspaper.
After high school he went to Washington D.C. and worked for a
newspaper there, never going to college. In the 1950's, Theodore
was in the U.S. Navy, leaving that to became a press agent for
a film production company. He then left job that to start making
documentary films for television.
Theodore has written 50 fiction and non-fiction books for both
adults and young people, and has received 23 awards. Theodore
Taylor has accomplished many things in his life and has reached
many people with his books.
