The Cay by Theodore Taylor
The Cay is the story of a boy named Phillip who lived in Caracao during World War II. He and his mother leave the island to wait out the war in Virginia. Their ship is hit by submarine fire. The next thing he knows, he wakes up on a raft with a black man named Timothy and a cat named Stew Cat. Phillip develops a headache and wakes up to total darkness; he is blind and on a raft in the middle of the ocean with a man he doesn't know.
After a few days they find a small island where they land the raft. At first, Phillip is totally dependent upon Timothy. This is difficult for Phillip since he has been raised to believe that all black people are inferior. Phillip changes his mind when Timothy is able to build a shelter and a device to trap rain, as well as catch and cook food for the two of them. Timothy does his best to teach Phillip to live on the island despite his disability and Phillip learns to love and trust the old man.
