Island of the Blue Dolphins

Karana is a Indian girl who lives on a small island in the early 1800's. Everything is peaceful until a ship of Aleuts arrives. They want to hunt the otter that live on the shores of the island. The Indians and the Aleuts make a deal. When the Aleuts do not keep their part of the bargain, fighting breaks out. After a great battle, the Indians decide to leave the island. Karana and her brother, Ramo, get left behind. Ramo is killed by wild dogs early in the story and so Karana swears to kill all the dogs on the island. Karana changes her mind when she befriends a wounded dog she names Rontu.
