Elizabeth George Speare

Elizabeth George Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts on November 21, 1908. She attended Smith College and Boston University where she was trained as an English teacher. Her first book, Calico Captive, was published in 1957. The Sign of the Beaver, published in 1984, received the Newbery Honor Citation for that year. Elizabeth George Speare died in 1994, but she is still recognized as one of the best historical fiction writers for children.
