Pollution

Millions of people throw trash and garbage out almost every minute. Sadly, most of it ends up in the ocean.  The Sea Otters live in the ocean, eating food that comes from the ocean, and bath, and grooming in the ocean.  If oil from an ocean oil spill were to move into the Sea Otters’ habitat, it would cover the otters’ fur with sticky oil and when the otter tries to groom itself, the oil will end up in the otters body poisoning it.  The oil will also cause the otters’ fur not to hold air any more and the otter will not be able to float, eventually the otter will drown or die from     hypothermia

Gas (exhaust) or smoke from automoblies can also pollute the sea otter’s environment.  The smoke and gas can ruin the sea otter’s environment causing their food supply to die out, which could make the sea otter starve and die.

Since Sea Otters are very curious and playful creatures, a plastic wrap or soda can can seem like food or a toy. When the sea otter comes to eat it, the sea otter will choke on the plastic. Even our left-over food is dangerous. Oily or greasy food can harm the sea otter.  In conclusion, we should recycle or try to waste a lot less to help our furry little friends.

Boats/Nets/Humans

Dozens of Sea Otters were caught and suffocated in fishing nets since 1995. Because of the nets causing the deaths of hundreds of sea otters, in 1977, the California Sea Otter was listed as “Threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Luckily for the sea otters a sea-net law was passed. Boats cause a probelm for sea otters also, because of the boat’s propeller, sea otters that are going up above the water sense little danger and get knocked unconscious by the hard metal or wood, or sadly, get sliced by the propellers. Warning signs help the boaters’ beware they are not the only ones at sea.
