Name: African Wild Donkey

Description: They look basically like domestic Donkeys. They are gray.

Weight: about 604 lb.

Where it lives: Found mostly in hilly and stony deserts and in arid to semi-arid bushlands and grasslands. It avoids sandy areas and has never been in the sandy dunes of the Sahara. They live near water. Territories of the males can be as large as 7.7 sq. miles.

Maximum Age: 40 years

Reproduction: Mares have only 1 foal per year. Females breed once every 2 years. The gestation period is 1 year.

 

Diet: The African Wild Donkey is a herbivore. It feeds mostly on herbs and brush. It is well adapted to live in the hardest desert grasses.

Why is it Endangered: They are captured for domestication, hunted for food and medical purposes. In the wild there are less than 3000 left.
