Scientific Name: ailurus

Description: long soft fur, bushy tail with rings like a raccoon, a pale face with rusty red streaks that curves downward from eyes

Length: 2 feet without the tail

Height:

Weight: 6-12 pounds

Where the animal lives: Asian countries- Nepal, Sikkim, Northern Burma

What it lives in: bamboo forests

 

Fun Fact: The red panda does NOT look like the giant panda.

 

Reproduction: The red panda's mating season is January to March. They give about 1-4 cubs at a time. The cubs are born blind and covered with hair. They open their eyes at 18 days and they leave the nest. The young become sexually mature at age 18 months. To produce milk, the mother has to eat three times the bamboo in order to produce enough for her young.

 

Diet: acorns, roots, fish, insects, mice, and of course, bamboo

The reason that the red panda is endangered is because of its fur. The fur is a red and is hunted greatly in Asia.
