Description: The orangutan is the only great ape from Asia. This creature has a round face with a dark red coat. The male species has large face flaps.
Length: The males are about 3 feet long. The females are 2.6 feet long.
Weight: The males weigh 90 kilograms and the females weigh 50 kilograms.
Where it Lives: The orangutan lives in lowland swamps in Borneo and montane forests in northern Sumatra and Indonesia.
Does it Live in a group or pack? No, however, the orangutan is fairly playful.
Reproduction: After 9 months, a single orangutan is born. Young orangutans are able to cling to ride on mothers' backs after 5-7 months. They usually continue to ride on the mother's back for a few years. The young are weaned around 3 years, however, they are not sexually mature until they are 10-11 years. The orangutans usually live until 35 years of age.
Diet: The orangutan is a herbivore so it eats fruit, soil, eggs, small vertebrae, insects, shoots, and leaves.
Why is it Endangered? The orangutan is endangered because of clear cutting in the rainforests. This means that the orangutan loses his or her habitat.
