Name: Swift Fox

Description: If you see a swift fox you will note that it is very small. In fact, it is the smallest fox in North America. An adult swift fox weighs 2-3 kilograms.

Life span: In the wild swift foxes are expected to live 3-6 years. In captivity they live up to 14 years.

What it lives in: The swift fox lives mostly in Canada, and in the prairies of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Breeding: In Alberta swift foxes breed in March. The pups are born in a den in May. 3-5 pups are born at a time.

Diet: Swift foxes hunt all day. They have nearly no fear of people so they are easy to kill. Some people kill red foxes because they think they are coyotes. Swift foxes lose their habitat because of agricultural expansion and home building. Dens are often plowed right over when farmers plow their fields.
