Scientific Name: Anadorthynchus hyacinthinus

Description: Hyacinth macaws have deep blue plumage, a yellow chin, and eye patches. They have a long tail and narrow wings.

Wingspan: 39-43 cm

Tail: 43-56 cm

Weight: unclassified grams

Where It Lives: Hyacinth macaws live in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and along the banks of the Amazon. They like woodlands, timbered savannas, and rain forests.

Does It Live in a Group or Pack? They live in flocks of 6-12.

Reproduction: Hyacinth macaws lay two eggs a year. The young fledge three months after hatching.

Diet: They feed mainly on fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetable matter. Palm nuts are their favorite food, especially nuts from Catole palms and Piacaba palms. Nuts that are received on the ground may be eaten there, but are more often carried to a nearby tree to be eaten.

Why is it Endangered? Hyacinth macaws are endangered because they are victims of the live bird trade. In 1987 they were worth $14,000!
