Alabama

Of course the Heart of Dixie has barbecue!

Dreamland Bar-B-Que Drive-In on the back streets of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, serves big, meaty charged ribs in a thin red sauce, and offers only one side dish: potato chips. Or, in the capital city of Mobile, try chicken, ribs, or pork smoked over hickory and pecan at The Brick Pit.

There's even an Alabama Barbecue Championship. (http://www.al.com/south/facts.html) has this to say about the contest:

"In 1991, the Demopolis Christmas on the River Cook-off became the official location of the Alabama Barbecue Championship. The festival began as the Christmas on the River Cook-off" as part of city Christmas festivities. The cook-off, itself, is a competition, covering nine states, 75 judges and approximately 8,000 eager barbeque fans. The winner will go on to compete in the "Memphis in May Barbeque Cooking Contest."
