The best time to breed guinea pigs is
when the mother or sow is at least 5 months old, but not
later than 10 months old. If it is your guinea pig's first
time breeding, you should use a male or boar that is 4 to 5
months old. Boars this age tend to make larger litters and
smaller babies so it is easier for the first time mom. It
takes between nine and eleven weeks for the babies to be
born. They have two to four babies at a time.

If you have an orphan guinea pig, you have to clean its rear end with a Q tip. You should feed an orphaned baby with a spoon only after it is twelve hours old. You have to be careful about how the babies are born and what you do with them after they are born so they will grow up healthy. Usually the mother will be able to take care of the babies by herself. If the babies come all together, you may need to help. You can to cut off the membrane covering the babies with scissors or with your fingernail if you need to. After you cut the membrane (you should use gloves to handle the babies so they do not get your scent) you should put the babies in a basket lined with an old blanket or towel. The babies will not open their eyes until they are a week old. The mother will feed them until they can find food for themselves. If one baby is being rejected you should take it to the vet, there could be something wrong with it.
