The New York Yankees started in 1901 as the Orioles. In 1903 they moved to New York and changed their name to the Highlanders. The New York Yankees are in the American League. The Yankees are the greatest team that ever played baseball. Their history is highlighted with dramatic games and some of the greatest players who ever picked up a bat.
Since the franchise started in 1903 to now, 2000, the Yankees have been known for their dominance and power. Most people have heard of the "Sultan of Swat," Babe Ruth, who is, no questions asked, the greatest player of all time. He dominated the 20s and early 30s hitting at least 50 dingers 4 times and even hitting 60 in 1927. Ruth played on the "Murderers Row" which consisted of Ruth, Tony Lazzeri, Lou Gehrig, and Bob Meusel.
They were the team to beat until the Philadelphia A's came and stripped them of their title. For 3 years the Yankees finished second to Washington (in 1933) and Detroit (in 1934 and 1935). There were so many incredible seasons in which the Yankees won the World Series, 26 to be exact. The most memorable World Series game was in the 1956 World Series when Don Larson threw the first and only perfect game in the World Series.
The Yankees are definitely the winningest team in sports history. Superstar players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusul, Mickey Mantle, Catfish Hunter, Dave Winfield, Tony Lazzeri, Don Larson, Reggie Jackson, and now Derek Jeter have all won World Series with the Yanks and established themselves as some of the greatest players ever. Baseball's king is still the New York Yankees and it will be a long time from now before they're dethroned.
