The Boston Red Sox began the franchise in the year 1903 as the Boston Pilgrims. However 4 years after the Pilgrims won the very first World Series (1903) they changed their name to the Red Sox (1907). At first the Sox started off slowly but very quickly they became powerful with the edition of "The Bambino" Babe Ruth.
The Red Sox became a powerful team and won the World Series in the years 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918. That was the last time they won the World Series. After that outstanding 1918 season the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for 125,000 dollars. Back then that was a lot of money. Since then the Sox have not won the Series. Because they traded Babe Ruth, it is said that the Curse of the Bambino is keeping the Red Sox from winning the World Series.
The closest the Sox came after that was the 1975 Fall Classic when Tony Perez hit the game winning home run in game seven. After that the Sox were a pretty silent team. The greatest players in Red Sox history are Carl Yaztrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Ted Williams, Tris Speaker, Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, Nomar Garciaparra, and Manny Ramirez. But with the recent signing of Manny Ramirez along with the incredible force of Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, the Red Sox hope to be World Series champs in the future.
