Fielding

In the infield there are four positions. They are third base, shortstop, second base, and first base. There are also three positions in the outfield. They are left field, right field, and center field. When you are fielding, you get three kinds of balls hit to you. They are a grounder, a pop fly, and a line drive.

In all these positions you can get a grounder hit to you. Sometimes the grounders come to you. For some others you have to dive for them if they are too far away to get in front of them.

When a grounder comes to you you want to get in front of the ball and keep your glove down on the ground so the ball will roll in.

Sometimes you have to dive for grounders if they are too far away to get in front of the ball. We don't recommend you dive until you learn how to dive correctly which we are going to teach you right now.

When you dive, you jump sideways. Try not to land on your arm, land mostly your side. Keep your glove out towards the ball and try your hardest to catch the ball. Get up quickly so you can throw the ball to the right base.

When you are receiving a popfly you want to get under the ball and stay under it. Keep your hand on your glove. Then when the ball touches your glove your free hand helps close your glove.

You may also get what is called a linedrive. A line drive is a hard hit ball that is hit straight. It can be hard to catch because of its speed. When you encounter a line drive from your chest up you want to keep your hand vertical. You want to put your hand horizontally when the ball is coming to you and it is below your waist.

When you encounter one to the left or right of you you want to stick your glove out in that direction and run in that direction, too. Don't take your eyes off of the ball for a minute.
