Tree Holes
Tree holes are
found on trees which have holes indented into them.
There are two
types of tree holes, those which have a lining of bark
and those which
do not have a lining in the bark which creates a
deep hole in the
wood of the tree. Some scientists call these holes root
pans or rot
holes. Pans are formed in the root part of the tree, and
they occur
naturally. Rot holes are formed because of weather, disease
or some other
outside condition which affects the tree. If the tree
hole is
watertight a phytotelmata is formed, which means
an
aquatic community
of animals will move into to the habitat. In all
tree holes leaves
fall to the bottom of the hole and create a lot of
detritus (dead
stuff) for animals to eat (Kitching pages 25-32).
Tree holes come in all sizes
and are found in
different parts of the world (except Antarctica).
