Bromeliads

There are about 2000 species of plants called Bromeliaceae. Bromeliaceae are popularly known as bromeliads, the most common one is the pineapple. . Bromeliads grow in warm temperate to tropical regions (Kitching, pages 17-21). They are found in North and South America. Bromeliads are terrestrial plants, which means they grow on land, and not in water. Some bromeliads are called epiphytes and grow in the rainforest canopy. Scientists who study entomology,( the study of  insects), have discovered micro-ecosystems of tiny animals living in the tank of the bromeliad. Bromeliads store up water in their tanks, or containers. They form watertight chambers which house a little habitat for many animals.   Click here  to learn more about the animals which live in bromeliads. Click here to enter the bromeliad picture gallery
