Introduction to Container Habitats
Container habitats, also called phytotelmata, are
plants which contain water in their tanks. There are five main types of
container habitats, bromeliads, pitcher
plants, tree holes, bamboo
internodes, and leaf axils. Each
container habitat is a micro-ecosystem hosting several dozen species of fauna
, some so small they can only be seen with a microscope, and many others can
be seen with the naked
.
The animals that live in container habitats are attracted to the community for
different reasons. Some animals just happen to stumble upon the container
habitat, while others have evolved to be specialized citizens of the
container habitat. Scientists have come up with very long words to describe the
