Carolyn Reeder's book, Grandpa's Mountain, introduced the Red Hill ThinkQuest team to the displacement of families from the Shenandoah National Park. It felt like we were experiencing what the characters were while we were reading it. When the book became sad, we became sad. When it was suspenseful, we were nervous. It also shows how the government is not always "for the people." Here are some of our thoughts on the people and the place that have become the Shenandoah National Park.
The book Grandpa's Mountain by Carolyn Reeder is about a 11 year-old girl named Carrie who goes to visit her grandparents in the Blue Ridge Mountains for the summer. She soon finds out it will be more than a quiet summer in the mountains when the idea of the Shenandoah National Park is rumored. No one believes it until people start getting evicted. How long will "Grandpa's mountain" stay his? Grandpa will stop at nothing to save his land from the CCC boys...
