An Overview of Carolyn Reeder's Visit

We had been waiting all morning for Carolyn Reeder to arrive, and when she arrived, it caused quite a stir. Ms. White went to open the door, and said in a low voice, "Guys, go and offer to help her carry her bags in for her." Travis and Leah, who were probably the most excited, shot off like a pair of lightning bolts to help her. Meanwhile, everyone else pranced about inside.

When Mrs. Reeder came through the door, I was trying very hard to keep myself from jumping up and down with excitement. Once Mrs. Reeder came through the door, there was a brief period of milling about, in which we discussed the exciting day to come. Then we were off to the fourth grade presentation.

In this classroom Mrs. Reeder discussed Grandpa's Mountain. She showed us pictures of real places that inspired the places in the book. She also talked about Moonshiner's Son and her adult books, which are about the Shenandoah National Park's history. After that, we went to the fifth grade presentation based on Across the Lines, Captain Kate, and Shades of Gray. She said during this war-oriented presentation that she doesn't write about wars-she writes about kids who have to face challenges. At this presentation, she talked about the real Civil War and what happened then that tied into Across the Lines. Then came lunch.

After lunch and recess, we went to her third grade presentation. Here, she gave a review of all of her children's books. But it seemed to me that she put in a lot about Captain Kate in this one, too.

After school, the ThinkQuest members had a private interview with Mrs. Reeder. In this we asked her questions about everything she would know that would be helpful in our web site, such as what she thought of the displacement of the mountain people and what inspired her to write Captain Kate.

That day was extremely constructive. We learned a whole lot. The information was interesting, too and has been very helpful in our web site.
