At Arbor Lodge State park there is a fifty-two room mansion, stables, an arboretum and other interesting things. The Carriage House lies west of the main house with early horse-drawn vehicles such as a Brougham, Chippendale and other types of carriages. In the gardens, which are located north of the main lodge, there are unusual roses, lilies, and lilacs. A log cabin was built on the grounds in 1890 as a pioneer memorial for the early settlers. Close by the log cabin is an original Rudulph Evans sculpture of J. Sterling Morton. The sculpture actually is made of three parts. The bench part of the sculpture stresses the personal thoughts of J. Sterling about the national Arbor Day celebration. This J. Sterling Morton quote is engraved on the circular bench, "Love of home is primary patriotism, other holidays repose upon the past, Arbor Day proposes for the future." This is all part of the historic Arbor Lodge State Park in Nebraska City, along with other treasures we have found.

History of the ownership of Arbor Lodge:

1. Buffalo and Indians

2. France - Napoleon

3. Uncle Sam

4. J. Sterling Morton (gave $1.25 an acre for 160 acres) - First framed house between Nebraska City and the Rockies. The original shape was like a L-shaped frame-structure with a wide porch in the front. Later the lodge was remodeled into a T-shaped structure.

5. Joy Morton (used Arbor Lodge as a summer home)

6. State of Nebraska (the Morton's donated the Lodge and the grounds to the State of Nebraska)

Caroline's Bedroom --Caroline's favorite color was red and her room has always been papered in that color. This room was also considered the guest room. The furniture and floor in her room are made of maple. Caroline was a very good artist. The oil paintings on the wall are her work. Caroline spent her last months in her room. This room is especially interesting since the furnishings and decorations are just as Caroline selected or designed them before her death in 1881.

Red Library- This room was the last to be renovated. Architect Jarvis Hunt designed the Neo-classical architecture. The furniture is of the mission style and constructed of oak. Tiffany-designed glass is throughout the front part of the first floor. A settee and matching chair made by Gustav Stickley are in this room. This leather-covered desk and matching table are made by Toby Furniture Company of Chicago. There is only one other settee and chair known to exist. There is also a plaster relief of J. Sterling Morton on wood done by Rudulph Evans in 1896. ( 360 panoramic view of the room )--You will need a QuickTime Plugin 1.1 -- this is also an outside link)
