Why & How Did The I&M Canal Close?


This is a picture of the Sanitary & Ship Canal.

The I&M Canal was closed in 1906. The I&M Canal handled large ships was a problem.The Metropolitan Sanitary District had to find a way to resolve this problem. In 1889, the Metropolitan Sanitary District found a purpose of constructing a larger canal. They wanted to build a larger canal next to the I&M Canal. It is called the Sanitary and Ship Canal.The Sanitary and Ship Canal was opened in 1906. The I&M was no use anymore. So the I&M Canal was abandoned. Then the I&M Canal was opened again as the Nations's First National Herritage Cooridor.
