Mars is the seventh largest planet in our solar system. Mars is the fourth
planet from the sun with Mercury, Venus, and Earth's orbits closer to the sun
than Mars. Mars' orbit is approximately 227,940,000 kilometers from the sun.
It takes Mars about 687 days to orbit the sun once, and Mars orbits the sun at
140 million miles per hour. Many scientists have referred to Mars as the "Red
Planet" because of Mars' rock, soil, and sky have a red or pink hue. The Red
Planet is only half the size of Earth. Mars has two moons, which are Phobos
and Deimos. From Earth, Mars looks like a bright orange red star. It looks like
this because the Red Planet is extremely dusty. The soil on Mars contains large
amounts of iron. All of this iron
gives Mars a rusty tint.
