Creatures & Monsters

Argus Panoptes is a man with many eyes. In earlier times it was said he had four eyes, but later on it was 100. Argus was in many adventures. He killed Arcadia, Satyr, and Echidnia. Hermes finally killed Argus when guarding Io for Hera.

Chimeara had a head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a snake. It breathed fire. Chimeara ravaged Lycra, setting fires and killing cattle until Bellerophon finally killed it.

Cyclopes were giant one-eyed monsters. There were three of them, representing lightning, lightning bolts, and thunder. Their names are Brontes, Steropes, and Arges. They were born to Uranus and Gaea. When Cronus got his power, he imprisoned the Cyclopes in Tartarus. They were finally released by Zeus, and they fought with him against the Titans. As a reward for their release, they gave him his weapons of lightning and thunder. They continued being his workers at Mount Olympus, throwing his thunderbolts.

Echidna was a female half nymph, half speckled snake. It lived in a cave, and came out to snatch up and eat those passing. She was ageless, but not immortal. The critter was killed by Argus Panoptes while sleeping. Echidna mated frequently with Typhoeus, producing a variety of offspring.

Hecatoncheireses were gigantic and had fifty heads. They also had one hundred arms with great strength. There were three-Briareus(or Aegaeon), Cottus, and Gyges(also called gyes). Their parents are Gaea and Uranus. Since they hated Uranus, he forced them back into Gaea's stomach.

Zeus later released them, and they fought with him against the Titans. They were able to throw one hundred huge boulders at a time at the enemy. Briareus served as Zeus's bodyguard.

Giants came from Uranus's blood resulting from his castration by Cronus. They became so powerful they tried to unseat Zeus and the Olympians. When the gods won, they imprisoned the Giants in Tartarus.

Gorgons are female monsters with snakes for hair. Their faces are so ugly that anybody who looked into their eyes would turn to stone.L The three of them had different origins. Stheno and Eurale were born as immortale gorgans from Phorcys and Ceto. Medusa was mortal.

Ash Tree Nymphs were generated from uranus's blood after his castration by Cronus.

Typhoeus was a hundred headed, fire breathing dragon. His heads never rest. It was born to Gaea as a last effort to keep the Olympians from defeating her children, the Titans. It almost succeeded, capturing Zeus and setting most of the gods to flight. Hermes was able to free Zeus, who dispatched Typhoeus with his lightning bolts. Typhoeus was buried under Mt. Etna in Sicily.

Cerberus is a three headed dog with a snake tail and snake head growing from it's back. He guards the entrance to the Underworld, allowing the dead to enter, but never to leave.
