Everest EQUIPMENT GLOSSARY!

1.Goggles- Much like sunglasses, these items are always used. They protect the eyes and prevent snow blindness. They are worn 100% of the time on the mountain.

2.
Tents- This item is used as a shelter on the mountain. They are quite large, and fold up to fit in the climber's bag. They must be sturdy, because if they aren't, you will easily blow away.

3.
Oxygen Tanks- This is a very important item. All beginner climbers use oxygen, because without it you could possible die. Some climbers do dare to climb without O's, but are very experienced climbers. When you are as high as 13,000 ft. above sea level, there is a low amount of oxygen, so you need a supplementary bottle of it with you.

4.
Jackets- Ah, the jacket. When you climb the mountain, you don't have some old jacket. You have over 6 inches of
clothing covering you, and when you reach the summit, you need even more than that, or you could get a bad case of
frostbite.

5.
Ice Axes- These items are used to hook onto ice on the mountain, especially when you are on a steep hill. They grasp into the ice, and hook in there so you can pull yourself up.

6.
Crampons- Crampons hook onto your climbing boots to have a good grip to the snow. They have a bunch of large, sharp horns that hook to the snow. They prevent you from being brushed away from the wind.
