The Proclamation of 1763 states that no colonist can move west past the Appalachian Mountains. This declaration took place after the French and Indian War ended in the same year. The colonists would like to move west because the French no longer occupied the land, and the colonists were still interested in the fur trade. Not permitting them to move west cut off all possibilities of making a profit from the fur trade.
King George III |
In order to keep peace with the Indians so that King George III would not have to send British troops to the colonies to defend them, the Proclamation of 1763 was issued. The Indians were granted land west of the Appalachian Mountains for their hunting grounds. The colonists already living there had to move to the eastern side of the mountains. The colonists could not buy or trade for any of the western land. This is upsetting the colonists as they have to abandon their homes and move east. They are getting angry about what King George III is doing to them and are wondering how much more British rule they can tolerate.
