The Senate

Our Senate is very important. It makes laws for our country. There are two people that represent each state in the United States of America. These people are called Senators. We elect them every six years. Since there are two Senators for each state there are 100 people in the Senate. There are certain requirements to be a senator. They are:

• The senator must be at least 30 years old.
• The senator must have U.S. citizenship for at least nine years.
• The senator must live in the state in which he is elected.

Approximately one-third of the total membership of the Senate is elected every second year.
