Why Pyramids?

When Pharaohs died, they believed they would go into an afterlife. They wanted to be happy there so they would have their slaves and favorite possessions put in the tomb with them. Since Pharaohs were considered to be half-Gods, they were not buried in the usual way, but placed in pyramids instead.

The Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid was built 2000 years before the Great Wall of China and 1000 years before Stonehenge. The Great Pyramid was 181 feet tall. Over years it lost 30 feet. It was believed to be built in a 20 year period.

How They Built Pyramids

Haulers would transport the stone by rolling it on wooden rollers smoothened by water and clay. Then, Quarrymen would pound wooden stakes into small cracks in the stone. When they poured water on the stakes, the wood would expand and the extra rock would chip away. Thousands of people died while building pyramids from falling rocks, falls from the pyramids, or being crushed by runaway stones. To stack the stones higher and higher, the workers would roll them up ramps to the next level.
