The Peace Corps The Peace Corps is an organization filled with men and women who live and work in a different country for two years. The people serving in the Peace Corps are volunteers who help solve some of the most important challenges that face communities in the world. Peace Corps volunteers help communities protect their environment, gain access to the clean water, and prevent the spread of diseases. They also build the bridges of cross-cultural understanding with people of other countries. They help people of other countries learn more about who we are as Americans, and at the same time, they bring home with them a better understanding of the people and cultures. Since its founding in 1961, over 150,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers. Through their work in 134 countries around the world, these volunteers have promoted friendship among people of different nations while devoting themselves to helping others help others. The Peace Corps was an idea of our nation's 34th president John F. Kennedy (1961-63). In October, 1960, during a campaign speech late one night at the University of Michigan, Kennedy talked about his dream for a "Peace Corps" of young people that would be dedicated to the cause of Peace and development across the world. Peace Corps volunteers work in a variety of different areas. We call these sectors. These sectors include: education, business, health and nutrition, agriculture, community, development, and the environment. To find more information log on the internet at:
