The conflict today between the Palestinians and the Jews go back more than 3000 years. In the 12th century B.C. the Philistines and the Hebrews both lived along southeastern coast of the Mediterranean sea. During the 150 years the Philistines were in power the two groups often fought each other. Palestine was ruled by many groups over the years. Today the land that was once Palestine and especially the two cities of Jerusalem is important to the three religions that believe in one god: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Jews believe that the area is the "Promised land" given to their ancestors. For the Christians it is the place Jesus was born and lived his life. Muslims believe that their prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven in Jerusalem. After WWI, Britain gained control over Palestine. Since then, Arabs states and Israel have had many conflicts. Conflicts today in the Middle East are between Palestinians, and Israelis. Some of the recent causes of conflict are that the Palestinians want their own Independent state, they want to have their own army and be in charge of their own security. Also, Israeli's capitol is Jerusalem, but the Palestinians also claim it as theirs. Israel wants to control the whole city. Palestinians want to control it and name it The Official Capitol of our Future State. Another problem is that the West Bank has been occupied by Israelis since the Arab-Israel war of 1967, but the Palestinian leader wants the West Bank under their rule. Today the United States is trying to help these two groups of people come to an agreement and have peace in their lands. To learn more about the Middle East visit these
