Names of the Colonies

You might ask how the colonies got their names like Massachusetts, Virginia, or Georgia.  An example would be that Pennsylvania got it's name from William Penn who discovered the colony Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania  means Penn's Woods.

Another example would be that Virginia got it's name in 1585 from Sir Walter Raleigh, who tried to establish a colony called Roanoke in what he called Virginia  which was named for Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen.
