Sir Walter Raleigh wanted to create a colony named Roanoke in what he named "Virginia," for Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen, in 1585. This Roanoke place was actually in what is now North Carolina. Sir Francis Drake rescued this group, but another colony was left behind in Roanoke in 1587. It disappeared by the year of 1590, never to be seen again. This is what we have come to call the "Lost Colony."
