Colonial Government

Over the years our government has changed from a monarchy  to a democracy. This change was caused by people who wanted to have a government that was fair.  Such people were Thomas Hooker (founder of Connecticut in 1636), Roger Williams (founder of Rhode Island in 1654), and many others as well.

You may be thinking that people came to America just for freedom of religion. Well, sorry you're wrong. Some did get away to have freedom of religion, but there were some other reasons involved too.  Some of the people moved to the colonies because they did not want a monarchy as their government.  A monarchy means that a queen or king will rule if their parents were king or queen. If you think about it, it would really be bad because the king could be mean or not so smart.

With all these people living in the newly settled land they had to figure  out a way to be completely free from British rule.  Doing this faced some problems. One of these problems was that Britain did not want to give up the colonies. Therefore,  soldiers were sent to protect British interests.

Another problem was a very big one. Not all of the people that lived in the new land wanted to be separate from British rule. The colonists were divided into three groups, the Patriots, Loyalists, and neutral. The Patriots wanted to be free from British rule, but the Loyalists still wanted to stay under British rule, and the rest of the people didn't know what they wanted.
