Seventies Big Events

The seventies had many big events that Americans are still effected by today.

The major events were mostly associated with Vietnam or the Watergate Scandal. The Vietnam War continued into the 1970's. In April, 1970, President Nixon ordered U.S. forces into North Vietnam to destroy supply centers.  This began riots everywhere, including college campuses.  On May 4, 1970, the National Guard went raging into the Kent State University campus to break of demonstrators. Four students were killed and nine others were wounded.  The war was finally over in 1975.
During the spring of 1970, Americans celebrated the first Earth Day.  This was to focus societies attention on environmental issues. The celebration of Earth Day still continues.
In June of 1971, the Twentieth-Sixth Ammendment of the Constitution lowered the voting age from 21 to 18.
Roberto Clemente, one of baseball's all-time greatest players, was killed in a plane crash flying to Nicaragua to help earthquake victims in 1972.  As a right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won four National League batting titles and was named the league's MVP.  He helped lead the Pirates to a World Series title in 1971.

President Nixon was impeached in 1974 due to lies and obstruction in politics.  This was known as the "Watergate Scandal."  Congress recommended that Nixon be impeached, where Gerald Ford became the new president.  During his 29 months in office, he survived two assasination attempts.  Both men were caught and sentenced to life in prison.  In 1977, Jimmy Carter was elected as the new President of the United States.
