The
fifties began as a rebuilding decade from World War II. Society enjoyed
shows like "I Love Lucy" and "Ozzie and Harriet" on their black and white
televisions. Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Prestley were icons.
Dwight Eisenhower was the president who sent out many troops to end the
conflict between North and South Korea. America lost 33,000 soldiers
in this Korean War. After this war ended, the Civil Rights Movement
became intense as the Supreme Courts ordered segregated schools to integrate.
Some of the words and terms that became popular during the fifties were
the H-Bomb, split-level houses, integration, DNA, hip, funky, automated,
junk mail, hot rods, cook-out and Third World.
